181 turbine wind farm on island of Lewis approved by Western Isles Council
news | wind
Plans to construct a 181 wind turbine
windfarm on the Scottish island of
Lewis have finally been approved by the
Western Isles Council Experimental Services Committee. After
scaling the proposal down from 234 to 181 wind turbines the council backed the plan by 18 votes to 8 subject to a further 5 turbines being removed and a further 50 conditions being met. The final decision rests with the
Scottish Executive, but they are likely to follow the recommendation of local councillors.
90% of local residents surveyed were opposed to the wind farm which will result in thousands of tonnes of peat being excavated from the moor, and new roads, electricity sub-stations, quarries and compounds being built on the island.
The
wind turbines proposed for the
Lewis Windfarm would be 140 metre tall 3.6 MW units with 107 metre rotors. Each wind turbine would need a 2 metre thick concrete and steel foundation 22m x 22m in size.
Almost 100 miles of new roads would need to be constructed from locally quarried rock to join the wind turbines. There are five potential quarries within the boundary of the wind farm site which would be exploited for this purpose.
The £500 million 651MW
Lewis Wind Farm proposal has polarized opinion despite the £5-6 million per year the wind farm would bring to the islanders by way of crofter, rental, and community benefit payments. During the four-year construction period over 400 jobs will be created, but only 37 employees will be needed to manage the completed
wind farm.
A director of Lewis Wind Power (LWP) David Hodkinson said in response to the news, "We are delighted with the council's decision, which we see as a milestone in the development of the Lewis Wind Farm."
