Wal-Mart planning world's largest corportate solar installation (100MW)

Wal-Mart is considering plans for the biggest
solar energy project in history, putting
PV solar panels on 3,900 of its stores across five states including California. The proposal, part of Wal-Mart's goal to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 20% during the next 8 years, would be 60 times larger than the current largest US solar project
Google's 1.6MW Solar installation currently under construction in California.
On Friday 5th January 2007 Wal-Mart finished accepting bids for the project and plan to announce the winning bidder by February 2007. It is believed that they plan to install up to
100MW of
PV Solar Panels over the next five years.
Wal-Mart have already experimented with
renewable energy including both
solar and
wind power on a couple of stores in Texas and Colorado. They are also working on prototype buildings which will be up to 30% more efficient than their existing stores.
Overall Wal-Mart's goal is to reduce their
carbon footprint to zero, becoming
carbon neutral. With energy costs being the second biggest cost to Wal-Mart after staffing, and generous tax-breaks being offered by Government for
renewable energy installations, this project should be good for Wal-Mart shareholders as well as for the environment.
