Recently launched, solarDAB is the world's first solar-powered DAB radio - made by Roberts and offering digital Band III and L band coverage.

As with the many wind up powered radios we have covered (e.g. EyeMax Freeplay (1) and the Freeplay Companion (2)), solarDAB contains a rechargeable battery pack (3 x AA NiMH) and has an integrated PV solar panel (3) to keep it charged up.

If solarDAB is to be used away from the sunshine, the internal battery pack will power the radio for up to 27 hours (from a full charge). A plug-in AC adapter/charger is supplied which can be used to charge up the batteries quickly if requried.

Such a radio is ideal for use in the garden, or left on a windowsill where it will charge up during the day, and it is of course perfect for use on camping trips, at the beach, while fishing, or anywhere else where conventional power is not available. The integrated solar panel is sufficiently powerful to provide "continuous play under adequate sunlight".

solarDAB weighs in at 672g, and has the following dimensions: 190 (w) x 100 (h) x 80(d) mm. A standard 3.5mm stereo headphone socket is built in, as is a line in/auxiliary input socket for playback of iPod/MP3 etc. The 80mm speaker is rated at 1 Watt.

The frequency coverage offered by solarDab is 174.928-239.200MHz in DAB Band III (using fitted telescopic aerial), and 1452-1492MHz in DAB L-Band (using internal aerial).
