solar | shopping | electronicsWe have previously covered the following products in the
Freeloader range:
Freeloader Solar Charger,
Freeloader Battery Charger, and most recently the
Freeloader Pro. Though excellent at what they do and well made, these solar chargers are a bit on the expensive side. Now finally there is a new low cost member of the Freeloader range, the new
Freeloader Pico.
Freeloader Pico
The
Freeloader Pico is a new (November 2009) economically priced lightweight (50 grammes) solar charger designed to recharge or directly power a vast range of portable devices such as MP3 players, smart and other mobile phones, and GPS systems etc. As with other
solar chargers it combines a
PV solar panel with a high capacity
Li-Ion battery pack which can in turn be used to recharge a mobile device.
Freeloader Pico is supplied with four
tips (connection adapters) designed to enable connection to the majority of mobile devices. These are as follows: Small tip Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Mini USB (for smart phones, PDA's, GPS's, Blackberry etc), and Samsung. The master cable supplied enables the Freeloader Pico to be charged via a
USB port on your PC (in around 3 hours). Additional tips are available and sold separately.
The Freeloader Pico specifications claim that from a full charge, it will power a mobile phone (on standby) for up to
35 hours, an iPod for 14 hours, a typical GPS for 1.5 hours, and an MP3 player for just over 2 hours. A 4 LED display shows how much charge remains in the battery pack.
The
solar panel on the Pico will recharge the internal battery in at least
10 hours from empty - a couple of summer's day in the UK. A solar charge indicator makes it easy to position the panel for maximum charging. The crystalline
solar panel is rated to output
75 mA to the internal
800 mAh Li-ion battery pack. Charging via USB is at 5V @ 250mA.
