The latest information about Honda's FCX hydrogen fuel cell powered car
transportThe
Honda FCX is a
hydrogen fuel cell powered electric car featuring the latest
ultracapacitor power storage technology.
The FCX has an electric motor powered by a
hydrogen fuel cell. Up to 156 litres of hydrogen is stored in high pressure tanks located under the rear seats (pictured below). The hydrogen is used to generate up to 86kW of electricity in the Honda
proton exchange membrane fuel cell with pure water the only
emission generated.
To provide bursts of power during acceleration and starting the engine, a 9.2 Farad
ultracapacitor (located behind the rear seats) is used which stores energy generated during deceleration and braking which would otherwise be wasted.
The AC synchronous permanent magnet
electric motor in the FCX ouputs up to 80kW accelerating the vehicle up to a top speed of over 90mph. Vehicle range is over 250 miles.
With such high voltages and explosive hydrogen gas involved safety is paramount. Therefore the cabin is kept completely isolated from the power lines and hydrogen, and hydrogen leak warning sensors will automatically close off the fuel line if escaped gas is detected. See diagram below.
Buying a Honda FCX
The Honda FCX is not currently available for sale. It is only available on lease to selected government and corporate organisations.
