Toyota Prius Hybrid Car

Hybrid cars such as the Toyota Prius are becoming more and more common in the USA as the price of petrol has continued to increase around the world, and the cost of hybrids has descended. While hybrids are anything but perfect, they are certainly a lot less damaging to the environment than gas-guzzling SUV's and the other large engined cars so popular in the US.

It should be remembered that a lot of modern European diesel (and therefore potentially Biodiesel powered cars offer better fuel efficiency, lower up front costs, and lower running costs than hybrids, but for what it is worth here is a list of the states in the USA with the highest hybrid take up in 2005. The figures are 1) State, 2) Number of hybrids sold in 2005 and 3) percentage of all US hybrids sold in that state:

California 52,619 26.4 percent
Florida 10,470 5.3 percent
Texas 9,632 4.8 percent
New York 9,372 4.7 percent
Virginia 8,650 4.3 percent
Illinois 7,286 3.7 percent
Washington 6,970 3.5 percent
Pennsylvania 6,948 3.5 percent
Massachusetts 6,060 3.0 percent
Maryland 5,673 2.8 percent

No surprises that California comes out tops with over one-quarter of all hybrids being sold in that state - a total of over 50,000.
