In our article Intelliplug and Intellipanel we introduced a couple of products used to save energy by automatically totally cutting the power to devices in standby mode.

Both the Intelliplug and Intellipanel (pictured above) work in the same way. A desktop computer is plugged into a master socket, and all the periperal items (monitor, printers, scanners, speakers, and even desk lamps etc) are plugged into the other sockets. When the computer is switched off or goes into standby mode, the Intellplug or Intellipanel automatically cuts the power to all of the connected devices.

These are both excellent products which help to reduce carbon emissions, save electricity, and they can pay for themselves in the financial savings they provide. However, they have one limitation - they cannot be used with laptop computers.

The original Intellipanel knew the attached computer had been turned off or been put into standby mode by detecting the drop in power drawn through the master socket used for powering the computer. Unfortunately this method could not be used with laptop computers since they continue to draw power to recharge their internal battery even when switched off.

Now the manufactures of Intellipanel, One Click Technologies Ltd have come up with a new Intellipanel product (pictured above) specifically for use with laptop computers. A USB cable is used to connect the laptop to the Intellipanel to tell it when it is switched off or in standby mode.

Intellipanel and Intelliplug are both Energy Saving Trust recommended products

Both types of Intellipanel are recognised by the Energy Saving Trust. They have a total of eight sockets - seven for peripherals and one master socket - and offer power surge protection, a telephone/modem splitter, and they are Mac and PC compatible.

Buying an Intellipanel

Unfortunately the laptop Intellipanel cannot be used with desktop computers and visa versa. Both are priced the same at around £30.00. The Intelliplug is now also available in a USB-connected laptop version in addition to its standard desktop version for around half the price of the Intellipanel.
