C and D sized Rechargeable Batteries
C And D Sized Rechargeable Batteries
Find out where to buy true high capacity C and D sized cells
storage | shopping | energy efficiencyThough nowhere nearly as common as
AA and AAA rechargeable cells,
C and
D sized cells are still found in many children's toys, torches, and portable radios/stereos.
Rather than manufacturing
real C and D sized rechargable cells, most manufacturers simply use their AA rechargeable cell to give the power, and then pad it out to the size of a either a C or a D cell. If for example, you look at the
UniRoss Hybrio range of rechargeables, the AA, C, and D cells all have the exact
same capacity - 2,100 mAh - yet the C and D cells cost almost double the price of the AA cells!
AA to C and D Battery Adapters
Rather than paying double for the same battery (with a bit of padding), AND having to buy an expensive C or D sized
battery charger, it makes far more sense to purchase your own relatively cheap high capacity
AA rechargables together with reusable
battery adapters such as these pictured below:
An
AA rechargeable cell is simply clicked into the plastic C or D sized holder, and inserted into the appliance to be powered.
High Capacity C and D Sized Rechargeable Batteries
Although difficult to find, high capacity
rechargeable C and D sized cells are available. At the time of writing (July 2008)
5,500 mAh C-sized, and
11,000 mAh D-sized rechargeable cells were on sale on
eBay. In the case of the D cells, at 11,000 mAh they offered a whopping
five times the storage capacity of most
rechargeable D cells sold in the UK.

If searching eBay for
rechargeable batteries we have found that the following searches work best (i.e. cuts out a lot of the rubbish):
